India vs England Test Series 2025: Shubman Gill’s Captaincy Era Begins, Can He Outshine Kohli’s Record? - best11

Cricket fans are gearing up to witness another India-England Test series. Fans are currently revisiting the results of past encounters between India and England. Discussions are also ongoing about which Indian captain led the team to the most victories against England. Following Rohit Sharma’s retirement, Shubman Gill has been appointed as the new captain of the Indian Test team. Before Rohit, Virat Kohli held the captaincy.

During MS Dhoni’s captaincy, the Indian Test team reached the top spot in the ICC rankings for the first time. However, Dhoni is not the captain with the most wins against England. India achieved the most Test victories against England under Virat Kohli’s leadership. In 2016, Kohli first led India in a Test series against England, which was held in India. Under Kohli’s captaincy, India lost only one Test match against England on home soil. India played 18 Tests against England under Kohli, winning 10 of them—a record unmatched by any other Indian captain. Rohit Sharma follows closely, with India winning four out of five Tests against England under his leadership.

In contrast, MS Dhoni secured only three wins in 15 Tests against England as captain, with India suffering nine losses. In the 2011 Test series, India was whitewashed 4-0 under Dhoni’s captaincy. In 2014, India managed just one win and lost the series 3-1 in England. The upcoming five-match Test series against England begins on June 20 at Headingley Stadium in Leeds. This series marks the start of a new era in Indian Test cricket, with a young squad led by Shubman Gill, excluding a few senior players. A series win would boost both coach Gautam Gambhir and captain Shubman Gill. However, India’s young team faces the challenge of taking on England’s experienced players.

Additionally, Jasprit Bumrah has been replaced by Rishabh Pant as vice-captain, surpassing KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal. Bumrah served as vice-captain during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia and led India in Tests in Rohit’s absence. Fitness issues led to Bumrah’s removal from the vice-captaincy, as reports indicate he informed the selection committee of difficulties playing more than three Tests due to health concerns. This series also marks the start of India’s campaign in the 2027 World Test Championship cycle, with the selection committee aiming to build a team for long-term goals.
